Banksy-style art appears of man escaping from Reading Prison

A work of street art on the wall of Reading Prison has led to speculation Banksy could have struck again.

The work depicts a man using knotted bedsheets to escape from the prison, which has been empty since November 2013.

The Victorian jail is most famous for being the place of incarceration of Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned there in 1895 and 1896 for homosexuality and wrote the Ballad of Reading Gaol there, Berkshire Live reports.

Speculation is mounting in Reading that the work on the vast outer wall of the prison is by Banksy, although this is as yet unconfirmed by the artist himself.

Banksy only verifies work as his on his Instagram page, with an image or two posted a day or so later, so all eyes are on that page to see if the Reading work of art appears soon.

Since the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston, after which Banksy posted a sketch of what he thought should replace it - he has only shared four works of art: the girl hula-hooping with a tyre in Nottingham, the woman sneezing in Totterdown, a video of the artist spraying the inside of a London Underground train, and a boat he paid for to rescue people seeking asylum trying to cross the Mediterranean.

The Reading artwork appeared over the weekend and was spotted by Berkshire Live reader Thomas Makepiece.

Berkshire Live speculated it could be a Banksy, and the person escaping from the prison could be Oscar Wilde himself.

The building in Forbury Road has been controversial as it is owned by the Ministry of Justice, which spends thousands of pounds a year maintaining it, despite it not being used.

A bid to buy it fell through last year and now Reading East MP Matt Rodda, campaigners and Reading Borough Council have been working on a plan to turn it into an arts centre, but a bid has been delayed.
