Banksy’s Girl with a Pierced Eardrum given face mask in nod to coronavirus pandemic

A Banksy mural in Bristol has been given a face mask in a coronavirus-themed makeover.

The Girl with a Pierced Eardrum appeared in Hanover Place in Bristol in 2014 as a parody of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring.

The mural has now been given a blue face mask, similar to those worn by health workers during the virus outbreak.

It is not known when the mask was added.

Some social media users have suggested the move was done by Banksy himself.

The anonymous artist recently posted new artwork on Instagram, showing rats wreaking havoc in his bathroom at home.

The caption on the set of five images said: “My wife hates it when I work from home."

The images show rats – which have featured in many of his previous artworks – knocking the bathroom mirror to one side, hanging on the light pull, swinging on a towel ring and stepping on a tube of toothpaste.

One rat is seen skipping on a roll of toilet paper, which has rolled down and across the floor.

Another appears to be urinating against the toilet seat, while one is reflected in the mirror apparently tallying up the days in lockdown in red lipstick.
