Banksy's Brexit mural whitewashed by vandals in Dover

A Banksy mural showing a man chiselling out a a star from the EU flag has been whitewashed by vandals.

The artwork, which had been valued at around £1million appeared on a derelict building near Dover's ferry terminal ,  had recently been covered up with scaffolding before the incident happened.

Bristol's elusive street artist told his 6.4 million Instagram followers he had planned to update the piece on "Brexit day".

He uploaded a computerised image of what the finished work would look like, showing a crumpled flag on the ground.

But he said as it's been painted over the "white flag" that replaced it "says it just as well".

During his post he said: "Oh.
"I had planned that on the day of Brexit I was going to change the piece in Dover to this..

"But seems they’ve painted over it.

"Nevermind. I guess a big white flag says it just as well."

Lots of his fans replied with disappointment to the news.

One said: "You know you've made your point when someone tried to whitewash your message!"

While another follow wrote: "I'm from Dover and trust me no one here was happy about it."

And someone else said: "It's indicative of the times when people are trying to silence art(ists)."
