Banksy mural vandalised by rival artist is restored

A recent Banksy mural which was vandalised soon after it appeared has been restored by a fellow street artist.

Create Escape, which Banksy painted on the wall of a former prison in Reading, was defaced soon after its appearance by fans of a rival artist, King Robbo. Now, a third artist, Peachy, has restored the piece to something closer to its former glory, ITV News reports.

The artwork first appeared on March 1, depicting a man escaping the former prison using bedsheets or sheets of paper and a typewriter. Fans of King Robbo then defaced the work by splashing red paint over it and writing "Team Robbo". King Robbo and Banksy reportedly had a long-running feud, which started in 2009 after Banksy painted over a Robbo tag in London. King Robbo died in 2014.

Peachy, however, has repainted the typewriter to make it look closer to the original. They've also adorned it with their own tag.

The prison, Reading Gaol, has been disused since December 2013. It is at risk of being sold off for housing developments, but campaigners are fighting for it to be turned into an arts and creativity hub. It's possible the painting is Banksy's way of throwing his weight behind the campaign.

Former inmates of the prison include Oscar Wilde, who some believe to be the man depicted escaping, and the boxer Anthony Joshua.
