A purported Banksy artwork is being considered for exhibition at the Tokyo government building in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said during a lecture in the capital on Wednesday.
A stenciled image of a rat holding an umbrella that resembles the work of Banksy, the world-famous artist who remains unidentified, could be displayed during the long 10-day holiday from April 27 through May 6.
The work was discovered on the corner of a floodgate near Tokyo Bay in Minato Ward, Tokyo, and measures about 20 centimeters square. In January, the Tokyo metropolitan government removed part of the floodgate to retrieve the image and stored it in a warehouse.
The image has elements that closely resemble those of a work found in a catalogue of Banksy's art. The design, the position of the bolts on the gate and the shape of a crack in the ground are similar. An expert said the work is highly likely to be a real Banksy.
As the metropolitan government has yet to determine whether the work truly was created by Banksy, it plans to post a note saying the work looks like a Banksy.
"I want many people to see this work that has become the talk of the town," Koike said during the lecture.
