Banksy art sells for £2.2million at Sotheby's in London

A trio of Banksy paintings have sold for £2.2million at an auction in London.

The paintings, titled 'Mediterranean Sea View 2017' depict the European migrant crisis and were originally estimated to sell between £800,000 and £1.2million.

The sale will be now be used to fund a new acute stroke unit and children's rehabilitation equipment for Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation.

Banksy's latest work has a political message concerning the recent migrant crisis. The work shows the sun shining over a seascape with life buoys and orange life jackets being washed on to the shore.

The three pieces that sold at the auction in Sothesby's London were originally created for Banksy's Walled Off hotel in Bethlehem which looks out onto the barrier separating Israel from the Palestinian territories.

The hotel opened back in 2017.

More recently, Banksy's latest work saw him spraying a message on a London Underground train centred around a message about the spread of coronavirus.

But shortly afterwards, a London Underground train cleaner scrubbed off the artwork which was thought to be worth around £7.5million.

Hours after the artist posted a video on his Instagram of him carrying out the work dressed as a member of the London Underground Deep Clean team, Transport for London admitted they hadn't spotted the graffiti was by Banksy, and the real 'deep clean' team had deep cleaned it off.
