Banks of River Clyde set to be transformed with new homes, restaurants and bars

The Banks of the River Clyde, at Glasgow City Centre, could soon be transformed with new homes, restaurants and bars.

As reported by the BBC, bosses at Glasgow City Council have pledged £25million towards plans which would see the redevelopment over the riverside stretch known as Custom House Quay, between Glasgow Bridge and the Clutha pub.

Construction could start as early 2022, with completion earmarked for 2024.

It is understood the land is currently unoccupied due to the 'structural integrity' of the quay walls. However, as part of the plans, 20 metres of new wall will be constructed. The project would be funded as part of the 'City Deal' scheme.

The riverfront area set for redevelopment stretches from Glasgow Bridge to the Clutha pub (Glasgow City Council)

It is hoped an "attractive waterfront destination" would be created, by a mix of "residential, hotel and commercial uses".

Council leader Susan Aitken commented: "Custom House Quay is very important both in terms of its location on the riverside in the city centre, close to Buchanan Street and St Enoch Square, and as an attractive development opportunity.

"Glasgow City Region City Deal funding means that its redevelopment can now take place.

"Investment in strategic sites on the Clyde is currently taking place at Glasgow Harbour and at Tradeston with the Barclays campus, and the development of Custom House Quay would be another step towards realising the full potential of the waterfront."
