Bankrupt: The NUFC opera star who sang the Blaydon Races to 52,000 fans at St James' Park

A Geordie opera star who sang in front of 52,000 Newcastle United fans has been declared bankrupt.

Graeme Danby memorably performed the Blaydon Races at St James' Park on numerous occasions.

He's also played legendary venues, including The Royal Albert Hall and La Scala in Italy, during a glittering career in which he was named one of the 100 greatest ever Geordies by ChronicleLive.

However, public records reveal he was declared bankrupt in November.

They list the NUFC superfan's address as 'Toon Towers' in Bedfordshire.

The bankruptcy order, imposed at Milton Keynes County Court, lasts for a year. When approached for comment, Mr Danby claimed it was "absolute news to me".

The singer, who is currently  in Tel Aviv, added he had received no emails or correspondence over the order.

The Consett-born singer moved at an early age to Ponteland, where his love for Newcastle United was born.

Kitted out in a Newcastle shirt, he sang the Blaydon Races several times - including prior to a derby with Sunderland.

He was later asked by Alan Shearer to sing ahead of crunch clashes with Middlesbrough and Fulham in the season United were first relegated from the Premier League.

"Alan Shearer has said he wants me to gee up the crowd and I’m happy to do it because no one is more black and white than me,” said Graeme at the time.

Away from football, he has been the principal bass with the English National Opera while in 2006, he and wife Valerie Reid each received a honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Northumbria University.
