Bank scams Ireland: Warnings issued as fraudsters pose as bank in realistic text message con

Online banking users should be extra vigilant as fraudsters are targeting people with realistic looking text messages in their latest scam attempt.

A warning was shared into the Bray Open Forum Facebook group by a concerned local who urged people not to fall for the devious con.

The local received a text message which appeared to be from Bank of Ireland, almost perfectly resembling a usual, legitimate message he would receive from the bank.

The message was supposedly alerting the customer of a new payee being added to their mobile banking, asking them to click on the link to cancel if this wasn't done by them.

However, Bank of Ireland has repeatedly warned that they will never send customers a text or email with a link asking for their full 365 PIN or their one-time passcodes.

The local alerted other members of the community about the scam attempt, saying: "Latest scam. The sender was "BOI", the same as the genuine messages I would get from BoI in connection with online banking, but that is easily spoofed (falsified).

"This is definitely a scam."

In June, Bank of Ireland issued a fresh appeal to their customers to be "extra vigilant" and keep their banking details secure at all times as fraudsters will continue to attempt to gain access to bank accounts.
