Bank of Ireland to hire 130 technology staff in digital drive

The Bank of Ireland is planning to hire 130 tech staff as it pushes forward with its digital agenda.

The bank, which employs around 900 people in Bristol, as well as in Belfast and Dublin, said the new roles would support its ongoing digital transformation.

According to the bank, contactless transactions have increased from 70 million a year in 2017 to 170 million in 2020.

The jobs include technical architects, software developers, engineers, specialised project managers, scrum masters and data analysts.

Ian McLaughlin, chief executive of the Bank of Ireland UK, said: “As digital banking continues to grow at an exponential rate we are delighted to be creating opportunities for digital professionals right across the bank. Right now, we have almost half a million log-ins to our mobile app every day."

He added: "We are investing strongly in technology and talent so that we can continue to innovate, to help us meet our customers changing needs as well as enabling us to bring new products and services to market, and develop our business into the future.”

The recruitment drive follows Bank of Ireland’s move towards new ways of working, including offering staff greater flexibility to work from a mix of home and office locations.

The bank has a new network of 'agile hubs' – four in the UK and 11 in Ireland - with meeting spaces and bookable desks, in a bid to encourage better work-life balance, it said.

Bank of Ireland said it was "keen" to encourage women to apply for jobs.

Mr McLaughlin added: “I am proud to say that at Bank of Ireland, 47% of all previously advertised IT roles have been filled by a female candidate.

"It is a good start but we’re very keen to not only maintain but improve upon that and would therefore strongly encourage women to look at the opportunities we have across the business and to consider a move to Bank of Ireland for the next step in their career.”
