Bank of Ireland sends 'important message' to customers as refunds from bank due

Bank of Ireland customers will receive a small refund in December due to a Central Bank decision.

BOI users are due €2.76 as a result of the bank not introducing a new security measure as quickly as others in Europe.

The bank said: "Strong Customer Authentication was introduced in Europe as part of the second Payment Services Directive (PSD2). However, introducing SCA for online card transactions took us longer than expected, and that is why we are writing to you today.

"We are sorry about this delay and want to reassure you that this service is now fully in place, adding to the safety and security of online shopping using your Bank of Ireland cards.

"As a result of the delay, the Central Bank of Ireland required that Bank of Ireland may not charge a full fee for a service that did not fully comply with regulatory requirements (i.e. PSD2 ecommerce SCA).

"Bank of Ireland will be refunding you an amount equal to €2.76, which will appear on your banking statement as ‘SCA DELAY REFUND’ during December."
