Bank of Ireland scam: Warning from gardai as number of customers lose money

Gardai have issued a warning about a text scam that has compromised a number of Bank Of Ireland accounts.

In a statement that was released today, Gardai have said: "We have received a number of complaints of fraudulent texts purporting to come from Bank of Ireland where unfortunately the recipient has clicked on a link and had their account compromised, leading to a loss in some instances, that has run into thousands of Euros.

The statement adds" Your bank will never send you a message requesting you to click on a link. If you receive such a message please delete it and report it to your financial institution."

The fraudulent message looks like this image below and in response, Bank Of Ireland has also issued advice to their customers after being made aware of the recent increase in scams like this one.

In a statement, the bank said: "Fraudsters are using fake text messages to try and trick people from sharing their personal details such as their 356Online PIN codes and passwords. Remember, you should never share your full 365 PIN or one-time passcode with anyone."

Additionally, Bank Of Ireland also provided the following practical advice.

They state: "We're seeing lots of fake text messages like these ones. Don't worry too much about what the message says or even that it looks like it came from BOI.

"Just remember that we will never send you a text with a link that asks for your full 365Online, or any one-time passcode. So don't click the link and don't give away any details that someone could use to log into your account.
