Bank of Ireland: Lower payment limits introduced due to scammer threats

Bank of Ireland is lowering the amount its customers can pay daily to newly added payees due to the ongoing scammer threats.

The previous limit of €20,000 has now been lowered to €5000 per working day for a period up to 48 hours.

Customers can pay the €5,000 as a single amount or in multiple transactions.

After 48 hours the previous limit of €20,000 can be applied to new payees.

€20,000 is the combined payment limit per working day. This amount covers new payees (after 48 hours), exiting payees, and other payment types such as bills, SEPA and international payments.

Bank of Ireland review these limits on a regular basis and have issued the following warning for its customers in regards to scammers:

"Fraudsters can insert a fake text into a thread of genuine Bank of Ireland messages so always be careful and if something doesn’t seem right, do not click and do not reply."

"If someone phones you asking for your banking details, hang up. Your best protection is knowing that Bank of Ireland will never text or email you with a link asking for your one-time-passcode, your 365 PIN or your online banking login details."
