Bank of Ireland customers warned about scam that says their online account is disabled

Bank of Ireland customers are being warned about a new scam that tries to access their account via text message.

A message from "BOI" being sent to users tells them that their online account has been disabled due to unusual activity.

The scam is being sent through a text message that urges the user to click a link that sends them to an external website.

But the link is not a legitimate website, and is not a Bank of Ireland link.

It says: "Your BOI online access is disabled by unusual activity. To restore your account, follow the steps on the link."

In a statement issued last month about scam texts and emails, Bank of Ireland said: "We are aware of fraudsters sending fake emails and texts to Irish consumers, pretending to be from Bank of Ireland.

"Customers are being asked to remain vigilant against online fraud and cyber activity, as the COVID-19 outbreak provides fraudsters with increased potential to exploit the current period of uncertainty. In particular we are asking customers to be wary of fake websites imitating Bank of Ireland websites.

"Customers may be directed to these sites through links in emails or text messages claiming to be from the Bank, or through social media."

Remember, Bank of Ireland will never:

  • Send you a text or email with a link directly to the login page of our online banking channels to confirm banking details or ask you to update their banking details
  • Ask you to click a link in an email with an urgent warning about suspicious activity on your account
  • Ask you to transfer money out of your account to protect you from fraud
  • Ask you to tell us any ‘one-time password’ or code that you have received from us by text
