Bank of Ireland closes 88 branches today as some face trips of over 20km to nearest location

Bank of Ireland will close 88 branches for the last time on Friday as part of its "rationalisation" programme.

The bank however has a new arrangement with An Post which means that Personal and Business Current account and Demand Deposit account customers can carry out a range of banking transactions at over 900 post offices.

This service, at no additional cost, is already in place as the bank branches get set to shut.

Some customers will face long journeys if they do want to get to a BOI branch, with Bantry locals now finding their closest location some 28.5km away in Skibbereen.

Explaining the decision, a Bank of Ireland spokesperson said: "These changes are being made so that we have a branch network that meets the demands of our customers today and into the future, while continuing to expand and improve our digital services.

"When we close the 88 locations in the Republic of Ireland we will still have a nationwide presence of 169 branches, with multiple locations in every county in Ireland.

"In addition, our customers will have access to the An Post network of more than 900 local post offices.

"Together, that means Bank of Ireland customers will have more than 1,000 places to bank."
