Bank of England marks anniversary with money tree sculpture made of £50 notes

Who says money doesn’t grow on trees? These wild flowers are made from steel and old £50 notes.

The artwork, which is one of 325 objects commissioned by the Bank of England for an exhibition celebrating its 325th anniversary, was created by London-based artist Justine Smith.

She made the flower sculpture from notes that were taken out of circulation and test notes for the new £50.

Ms Smith said: “I am interested in the idea of wild flowers being tenacious and sturdy. I see banknotes as a symbol of labour, strength and continuity — of putting down roots.”

Curator Jennifer Adam admitted it was “pretty tricky” to narrow down the 50,000 items in the bank’s vast archive for the show.

325 Years, 325 Objects is at the Bank of England Museum from July 22 to May 15. Admission is free
