Warmer temperatures and sunny spells are forecast for Monday after heavy rain dampened the bank holiday weekend across much of the UK on Sunday.
Highs of 21C (69.8F) are expected after a bright start to the day, although clouds will develop later on, with most parts – particularly southern and eastern areas – set for a dry, breezy day.
Brighter spells are predicted for the late afternoon in places as the long weekend draws to a close, with scattered showers mainly affecting northern and western parts.
Heavy rain on Sunday had forced the cancellation of the MotoGP race at Silverstone after standing water meant parts of the new track were too unsafe to race on. It was the first time the race had been cancelled in 38 years.
Elsewhere, tens of thousands braved the downpours at Notting Hill carnival, Europe’s biggest street party.
BBC forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said: “We’re in between weather systems so that means there is a bit of a lull in the weather. The sun will come out, the winds will die down: it’s going to feel quite a bit warmer.”
It would not be a completely dry day, however, because low pressuremeant showers would persist in some parts of the country throughout the day, he said. “But the vast majority of us should have a fine Monday,” Schafernaker said.
The rest of the week is expected to remain cool and cloudy, while some forecasts suggest a return to hot weather in September.
