Bank holiday revellers hit with major price hikes for most popular Airbnb locations

A last-minute UK city break over the summer bank holiday weekend could set travellers back by an extra 22 per cent in the nation's costliest locations, latest research has suggested.

The study, by money.co.uk, investigated the average nightly price of rentals on accommodation booking site Airbnb over the dates and locations where the UK’s biggest events and bank holidays taking place throughout 2021.

The prices were then compared to the corresponding dates of the previous week to reveal which events increase Airbnb prices the most with Halloween weekend in Glasgow seeing prices soar by a staggering 58 per cent.

The three-day summer bank holiday weekend encourages many to embark on a city break, with Airbnb prices in the UK’s biggest cities increasing by an average of six per cent this coming weekend.

Liverpool saw prices increase the most, with the nightly fee jumping by 22 per cent.

best-priced bargain breaks were in Sheffield and Birmingham, according to data, where Airbnb prices increase by a mere one per cent.

Prices also spiked when demand coincided with special events or occasions.

In the country’s 10 biggest cities, prices rose by six per cent on average for Halloween, but the city which saw the biggest price increase by far was Glasgow, with the average price going up by 58 per cent.

To save money, avoid staying in Airbnb’s during Christmas weekend, as average rental prices go up by an average of eight per cent, the highest average increase of all bank holidays. Prices increased most notably in Edinburgh with a hike of 18 per cent compared to the previous weekend.
