Bank holiday queues as shoppers rush out to stock up at supermarkets and DIY stores

Today marks the first of two May bank holidays and it looks like many people have spent their time off at supermarkets or DIY Stores.

Lockdown was extended by another three weeks last night meaning restrictions and safety measures are all still in place.

This means people should still only be going out as little as possible, when they need to pick up essential items.

With Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressing the country on Sunday to announce how lockdown measures will be eased going forward, people are getting excited at the prospect of going out more.

However, for this weekend only essential shopping is permitted.

Shoppers had to queue outside stores across Liverpool this afternoon as they waited to be allowed inside shops such as Sainsbury's and Edge Lane's M&S Food Hall.

In scenes similar to what we've witness over the last couple of weekends, there were also queues outside DIY store B&Q and Halfords too.

If anyone is still unsure of what they can go shopping for we've included the full list, issued by the National Police Chief's Council, of what you can and can't go shopping for over the Bank Holiday weekend.

What you can and can’t go shopping for during lockdown

  • To buy food for several days, including luxury items and alcohol
  • To buy a small amount of a staple item or necessity (for example a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk)
  • To collect surplus basic food items from a friend
  • To buy tools and supplies to repair a fence panel damaged in bad weather
  • You are allowed to buy non-essential items during a shopping trip for your weekly necessities.
  • The list states that's it's not likely to be considered reasonable to go and buy DIY supplies for a project that isn’t essential, for example repainting your kitchen.
