Bank holiday on day of Queen's funeral 'expected'

A bank holiday on the day of the Queen's funeral is likely, although businesses will be given the choice to close or not. Queen Elizabeth died earlier today (Thursday, September 8) at Balmoral.

The country will now enter a Period of National Mourning, with the Government stipulting how long it should last. However, it is typically held until the day after the monarch's funeral, which is traditioanlly held 10 days after their death.

It has already been confirmed the Queen's funeral will follow protocol and go ahead at Westminster Abbey and St George's Chapel in Westminster in 10 days time. It is believed the Government will make the day of the Queen's funeral a form of public holiday - a National Day of Mourning - as a mark of respect, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The day of the funeral is expected to be Monday, September 19. The funeral will be for invited guests, while the burial will be private.

It is expected the Queen will lie in state, in a closed coffin, for several days before the funeral to allow the public to pay their respects. It will be followed by a committal service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Both will be televised. A two-minute silence will be held across the country on the day she is buried privately in St George's Chapel's King George VI memorial chapel, an annexe to the main church.

Plans also include a military procession through London as the Queen's coffin is taken to and from Westminster Abbey, while, in Windsor, the coffin is expected to be driven through the town to St George's Chapel.

Crowds will be expected to gather along the route, but the finalised arrangements will take into account the current levels of coronavirus.
