Bank holiday news: The big stories you might have missed while you were enjoying the sun

Haven't been checking the news much over the bank holiday? That's ok - with weather like this we wouldn't want to be glued to our screens checking for updates either.

Whether you've been out sunbathing or enjoying an Easter celebration with family, you might well have missed some of what's been happening in the North East.

Alex Johnson, from Chester-le-Street , was believed to have fallen from the Tyne Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Devastated sister Ashleigh Marr urged people to join a search of the river, which lasted across the weekend.

Meanwhile, a fiancée paid a heartbreaking tribute to a young Merchant Navy engineer whose body was tragically pulled from the water in the Caribbean.

Ben Burgess, 25, was on shore leave when he was found dead in Oistins, in Barbados, last Wednesday, and on Friday, we shared the moving words of his partner Rebecca Pattinson, as she honoured the man she had been preparing to marry.
