Takeaway food experts are warning that we could be hit with a kebab shortage later today as Brits look to bag a simple dinner to round off the bank holiday weekend.
Figures from Foodhub show doner kebabs are the most popular item on bank holiday Monday, with the number of orders doubling.
If that pattern repeats today, it could mean takeaway restaurants run out of meat well before closing time.
Foodhub spokesman Wil Chung said: “Bank holiday Monday is always a busy time for the takeaway sector, as people sit back and relax after a busy weekend."
He added: "As summer is drawing to a close and the nights turn darker, it’s no surprise that people are choosing to indulge in a kebab – the original takeaway food.”
Along with kebabs, fish and chips orders also tend to surge, although the traditional British dish doesn't prove quite as popular as pizza or chicken wings.
Demand also doubles for Indian takeaways on a bank holiday - seeing them make up 14% of all orders placed.
Overall, orders through Foodhub rise 28% during the bank holiday, with customers spending 5.5% more than usual.
But not quite everything rises - with dessert orders see a dip in demand as savoury dishes are vavoured.
