Bank holiday heatwave: What the weather will be in the North East as UK set for soaring temperatures

The North East will bask in glorious bank holiday sunshine - but the public are still asked not to flock to busy beauty spots and beaches.

After a fairly chilly start to the day, temperatures are expected to soar up to 21C, with warm and dry weather expected for the rest of the day.

A mixed weekend of weather saw gale force winds of up to 40mph across the North East with some showers making an appearance.

However, the bank holiday and the following days are expected to be hot and sunny.

On Tuesday, temperatures are again forecast to rise into the 20s with no sign of rain on the way.

During the rest of what would have been half-term week, temperatures will stay in the high teens with sunny spells for most areas.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: "All the computer models are in strong agreement that high pressure will sit around for most of next week, certainly bringing most of the south and central Britain fine and sunny weather."

Although some lockdown restrictions have been eased and families can now sit and relax in the sunshine, they are still being urged not to go to busy areas.

Northumberland County Council has reopened three-quarters of its car parks to enable people to exercise further from home but has asked all visitors to be "sensible" and to keep their distance from others.

North Tyneside Council has also reopened coastal car parks but warned people should still stay close to home.

Some weather charts are suggesting June could get off to a cooler start with temperatures as low as 12C. Outbreaks of rain and some thunderstorms are also being forecast.
