Bank Holiday for England win in Euro 2020 final divides opinion with Scots on GMB

An extra Bank Holiday proposed for if England win the Euro 2020 final has divided opinion among Scots.

Boris Johnson has refused to rule out allowing a special extra day off in the event of a historic triumph over Italy this weekend.

Gordon Smart told ITV's Good Morning Britain that he would rather work than have a Bank Holiday to avoid hearing "It's Coming Home played 24/7".

The Scottish broadcaster said: "You're tying yourselves up in constitutional knots here. A Bank Holiday - is that for all the home nations or just for England? How does it work?

"This idea that we should all join in with the celebration is total nonsense.

He added: "You never want your rivals to win."

Gordon also took aim at the notion of Scotland being part of the Three Lions' success, adding that our country is part of the UK and not England.

He said: "It is very difficult to dislike them [England's football team] but I am finding a way to do it.

"I will be as far north in Scotland as possible on Monday just in case [England win]."

He added: "It is difficult to understand unless you support Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

"You tune into the commentary and every three seconds you are reminded about 1966.

"Richard Madeley did it the other day when he said 'you lot' and he talks about 'us' as part of England.

"We are not a part of England, it is the United Kingdom."

It comes as tens of thousands of people have joined calls for a Bank Holiday on Monday if England win Euro 2020 at the weekend.

Boris Johnson has hinted at the idea, however it has gained criticism for being unfair on employers to declare a Bank Holiday at 10pm the night before.

England is set to face Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday in the Euro 2020 final.
