Bank holiday announced for Queen's funeral to allow Brits to pay respects

A bank holiday will be declared for the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

King Charles III confirmed he has approved an order for a state holiday on the day the late Queen is put to rest. The date of the funeral has now been confirmed for Monday September 19.

Charles III was announced as king on Saturday morning during a ceremony at St James's Palace. He immediately ascended to the throne upon his mother's death, but the Accession Council had to meet to announce his reign as per tradition and protocol.

During the ceremony, where King Charles signed an oath, he paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth.

He said:“I know how deeply you and the entire nation, and I think I may say the whole world, sympathise with me in this irreparable loss we have all suffered.”

King Charles was proclaimed as king from the balcony of St James' Palace later on Saturday morning.
