Bank conversion bid prompts worries from neighbours about when student housing plans 'will ever end'

A landmark building in the Nottingham city centre which will be turned into student accommodation has faced backlash from Nottinghamshire residents, asking 'when will it end'.

Developers want to extend and convert the old Halifax building, in Milton Street, into accommodation.

Plans, submitted on behalf of Megaclose, said that the project seeks to redevelop the existing building and add a contemporary single storey extension to the roof, providing retail space and student accommodation in a key city centre location.

Doreen Waller, 73, retired, from St. Anns, thinks there is too much focus on student accommodation, and housing for the elderly and disabled should be a priority.

She said: "There is far too much in the city, it's all over, it's everywhere, when will it end?

"It should be used to house the elderly or disabled, something to help people out.

"If not some residential flats instead but not students, there are so many."

The project would create 29 bedrooms and a range of cluster and studio flats.

Retried, Elsie Dean, 74, from The Park, thinks that it should turn into something to compliment the beauty of the building.

She said: "It's really beautiful, something to show off the age of the building.

"A nice independent coffee shop or restaurant would fit in here.

"I've noticed lots of student accommodation buildings, a cafe would bring in good revenue."

Pete Mitchell, 52, who works in regulations, Radcliffe, thinks students will struggle to access the flats.

He said: "It's a fantastic location but how will parents drop their children off with all their stuff?

"There is no parking, nowhere to go, it'll be really bad.

"I think there is a demand for student accommodation but access is an issue with this place."

There are other Halifax banks in Front Street, Arnold, and Central Avenue, West Bridgford.
