Banish mould with kitchen staple as expert says it's 'great for cleaning purposes'

The spring clean is fast-approaching and so many will be breaking out the mop, the scrubbers and the sponges to get the house sparkling and to banish and mould that's been building up..

And while cleaning the entire household can be a long and sometimes exhausting process, the spotless and tidy home is often worth it - for as long as it lasts. This year, some may want to swap out harmful cleaning chemicals for some more natural remedies.

Mahira Kalim, Founder and CEO of eco-friendly cleaning company Spruce, has worked alongside Wave to share clever ways to clean without using harsh and harmful chemicals.

According to Mahira, citric acid, found in fruits such as lemons and oranges, is perfect for tackling mould, hard water stains and rust.

"Citric acid can be great for cleaning purposes, whether it's formulated in a product or used as a stand alone ingredient," the expert says. "It's effective at tackling soap scum, hard water stains, calcium deposits, lime and rust, and it can help kill bacteria, mould, and mildew."

"What’s more, it's also great for general disinfecting and cleaning without causing harm to your health or the planet."

There are also plenty of household essentials that can be used to get you home sparkling-clean and will soon "become your best friend" according to Mahira.

The CEO says: "bicarbonate of soda is a great natural carpet cleaner, for general use and stains. Simply sprinkle baking soda lightly over the carpet or area you want to clean, rub in and let the baking soda sit on the carpet for 30 minutes before vacuuming the carpet as you normally would."

Mahira says baking soda can also be used for your fridge, saying: "One of my favourite eco-friendly cleaning hacks you can easily do at home is to make your own fridge deodoriser from bicarbonate of soda and essential oils.

"Simply add half a cup of bicarbonate of soda and 5-6 drops of your favourite essential oil to a small jar and place in the back of your fridge to warn off any nasty odours - it works every time."
