Bangour Village parking ban extended over summer to curb crowds flocking to abandoned hopsital

The Bangour parking ban to curb crowds visiting the hospital site will be enforced throughout the summer.

West Lothian Council has decided to keep the ban, introduced in June, until 13 September.

It means parking restrictions on the Bangour Farm Road and into the entire 30mph section of the main A89 road.

The restrictions, which allow police to ticket cars, were first extended at the end of last month in a bid to discourage visitors arriving en masse in the village of Dechmont, especially at the weekends.

Villagers were “besieged”, said one local councillor Diane Calder, by carloads of people travelling to the site of the former hospital following online messaging.

Another local councillor Chris Horne said: “I welcome the extension in parking restrictions, which is an important feature in helping locals live their lives as normally as possible until things finally settle down again at Bangour.”

Since the initial gatherings both the police locally and nationally have stepped up activities to discourage travel to the site. Local police have begun dog patrols of the area at night. A security team supplied by the housing developers, Ambassador, has also been beefed up.

A large part of the hospital grounds is to be redeveloped for housing, with some of the buildings set for demolition. Some, however, will be retained for redevelopment.

The derelict hospital has acquired a cult status online. Long popular with urban explorers, who are drawn to disused buildings, the site gained wider notoriety after it was used as a set for the Hollywood horror film The Jacket in 2005.
