Bangour Hospital redevelopment moves step closer as 'infrastructure works' given green-light

The long-awaited redevelopment of Bangour Hospital in West Lothian has moved a step closer.

Plans for a whole host of infrastructure works, including a new roundabout on the A89, have been given the green light. Other enabling works include the the creation of footpaths, car parking, landscaping and access points. The plans were given the go-ahead at a meeting of West Lothian Council's development management committee.

Bangour Village Hospital, just west of Dechmont, was previously a psychiatric hospital. The last remaining ward closed in 2004.

The site owners and applicants are Allanwater Bangour and Ambassador Group and a mixture of new build housing, renovation and conversion of listed buildings and supporting development is envisaged by the applications. A detailed application for the whole site is expected to be lodged with the council soon.

The entrance to the hospital will remain as the main entrance to the housing development.

Councillor Charles Kennedy, chair of the development management committee, said: "The proposed works will create an improved entrance to the former site which are notable and important nationally and locally. The infrastructure changes are required to allow for the wider redevelopment of the site.

"The council supports the principle of the redevelopment and is keen to support development which will retain and reuse the important listed buildings on the site."
