Bangor boy makes homemade doggy bag dispensers to stop fouling

A Co Down schoolboy has found his own way of clearing up the dog mess blighting his home town.

Sam Adair, 14, has created doggy bag dispensers from old plastic bottles and tied them to lamp posts in Bangor West .

The Priory College pupil said he had already spotted people using them and was delighted the idea was catching on.

"I was tagged in a post about dog poo and it made me feel worried about the impact of it on the community," he said.

"So I have put up empty bottles with dog bags in them and cable tied them to posts around Bangor West. There are 5 or 6 up so far.

"People think it's a good idea and I've seen people using them which makes me happy."

Sam, who has two Yorkshire Terriers - Ollie and Rosie - said he had noticed a lot of dog poo around the coastal path close to his home .

He added: "It is a small thing that I am doing but everything makes a difference. As a dog owner myself there have been plenty of times I have to walk the dog and after leaving have discovered that I have left my doggie bag in the house.

"That's a mistake anyone can make but with dispensers on your route you can grab a bag and stay responsible."

Sam is being supported by local DUP councillor Peter Martin who said: "Sam's public spirited actions were highlighted to me a few weeks ago when someone from the church we both attend mentioned what he was doing.

"I got in contact with him to find out more and discovered a humble young man committed to taking dog foul off our streets. Eventually Sam and I met up and he showed me his dispensers and explained how he picked the areas to target.

"On behalf of Ards and North Down Borough Council I want to both commend and thank Sam that, through his own initiative, he is contributing to reducing dog foul on our streets, he's a super young man."
