Bangor arson attack could have lead to "serious damage or loss of life"

An arson attack on a home in Co Down could have lead to "serious damage or loss of life", police have said.

Emergency services were called to the property in Drumawhey Gardens in Bangor in the early hours of Saturday, July 10.

It was reported that a fire was set at the front door of a property. No on was inside at the time but the PSNI warned the fire could easily have spread to other parts of the building and may have resulted in serious damage or loss of life.

Detective Sergeant Westbury said: “Shortly after midnight, a report was received of a fire at the front door of an apartment at Drumawhey Gardens in the town.

“Police and NIFRS attended the address.

“The front door was left badly damaged. Fortunately, the occupant was not inside the property at the time. However, the fire could easily have spread to other parts of the building and may have resulted in serious damage or loss of life.

“Enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances of the incident, which is being investigated as arson with intent to endanger life, and anyone who may have any information, or who witnessed any suspicious activity, is asked to contact police on 101, and quote reference number 19 of 10/07/21.”
