Bangladesh hire former India spinner as technical consultant for ODI World Cup

NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Sridharan Sriram is set to assume the role of a technical consultant for the Bangladesh cricket team during the upcoming World Cup in India, as confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday.

Sriram, who represented India in eight one-day internationals (ODIs) from 2000 to 2004, will join the team in Guwahati for practice matches against Sri Lanka and England in preparation for the 50-over tournament.

Bangladesh's World Cup campaign will officially commence on October 7 against Afghanistan in Dharamsala, with the tournament scheduled to run until November 19.

Sriram previously held similar roles with Bangladesh during the Twenty20-format Asia Cup in the UAE and the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia last year.

Apart from his international cricket experience, Sriram had an illustrious first-class career spanning nearly 18 years. He also served as a consultant coach for Cricket Australia from 2015 to 2018 and as an assistant coach to the Australian national team for the subsequent four years.

The coaching staff for the Bangladesh team is led by former Sri Lankan opener Chandika Hathurusingha and includes former South African fast bowler Allan Donald and Rangana Herath, a former Sri Lankan spinner.
