Flooding topped the wish list of voters in the recently ended Bangkok election to see the new governor to tackle with their safety coming second in their priority, a survey showed on Friday.

A poll by King Prajadhipok's Institute showed almost one-fifth of Bangkokians wanted Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to prevent flooding in the capital in the wet season and almost 16% wanted a safer Bangkok for their lives and properties, ahead of corruption, which received 14.5% in the survey results.

Key problems needing a fix from the governor were:

  • No more floods in the rainy season: 19.9%
  • Safety of lives and properties: 15.9%
  • End of corruption: 14.5%
  • Better pedestrian pavement: 10%
  • End of pollution: 9.5%

The survey asked 2,150 eligible voters in Bangkok from Monday to Thursday after Mr Chadchart won a second term as Bangkok governor in the election on Sunday. The Bangkok Metropolitan Council election conducted simultaneously saw the People's Party controlling 22 out of 50 seats, followed by the Working People group on 11, the Democrat Party on eight and Pheu Thai Life Long Tua on four.

The official results of the two elections have not been announced by the Election Commission.

A quarter of Bangkok residents in the survey by the institute also expected the city councillors to concentrate on pushing for rules and regulations for public benefits and 15% relied on them to monitor the work of Mr Chadchart and his administrative team.
