The man accused of shooting and killing a driver on a Bangkok expressway has been arrested on Koh Chang, where he had fled after the incident on Tuesday.
Songkran Panpu, 37, was arrested at a rented room on the tourist island on Wednesday. He was apprehended with another man who helped him escape, police said.
The shooting happened on the expressway near the Pracha Chuen toll plaza in Bang Sue district of Bangkok at 4.50am on Tuesday. Police believe it followed an incident about 500 metres in front of the toll plaza, when a Toyota Vellfire van cut in front of the victim’s car.
Anuwat Yatniyom, 34, was shot dead in his car shortly after paying the toll when the van pulled alongside his car. Bangkok police said earlier said a 9mm pistol was the weapon used.
The suspect fled the shooting scene. His van was left at a hotel in Nakhon Pathom province on Tuesday and a taxi driver told police the suspect hired him to travel to Chon Buri. The suspect is from Chon Buri.
Anuwat had been shot twice. One bullet hit his right arm and the other hit his neck, which bled excessively and led to his death.
The victim’s mother said in tears that road rage should not have led to such a cruel killing, adding that her late son had just started his own family.
