Bangkok ensure Kirins stay winless

Bangkok United's Nelson Bonilla, right, in action against Muang Thong United.

Bangkok United piled agony on former champions SCG Muang Thong United with a 1-0 victory at their Thammasat Stadium to win their first Thai League 1 contest of the season.

Bangkok United, held to a 1-1 draw in their season-opening battle at Sukothai last weekend, stole the winner with a spectacular diving header by Nelson Bonilla soon after the hour mark.

The capital side, also among those aspiring to cross the finish line ahead of the 16-team pack in this year's title race, made the most of Buriram's uncharacteristically toothless start.

Muang Thong's second loss in a row makes their coach Phairoj Bovornwattanadilok the leading candidate to become the first team manager to lose his job this season.

The upshot also meant the Kirins' high-profile signing, Vietnam goalkeeper Dong Van Lam, also remains winless in his first two games in the Thai top flight.

The triumph also lifted Bangkok United, runners-up last year, to third place in the league.

Meanwhile, with the big guns misfiring early in the season, Thawatchai Thawatchai Damrong-ongtrakul's PT Prachuap have consummately assumed the role of pace-setters in Thai League 1.

A day after defending champions Buriram United's goalless draw at Suphanburi, Prachuap recorded their second victory in as many games yesterday, defeating newcomers PTT Rayong 2-0.

While it is too early in the season to draw any meaningful conclusions, Prachuap have been impressive in their both outings so far.

They presented their credentials with a 1-0 victory over former champions SCG Muang Thong United, who claim to have spent close to 400 million baht to power their title ambitions.

At Sam Ao Stadium, Prachuap turned up the heat after a first half which saw visitors Rayong being denied a goal by VAR intervention. The TV referee disallowed a goal by Apiwat Pengprakon after he was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box.

Prachuap's Brazilian strike duo, Matheus Alves and Harlison Caion, both got on the scoresheet.

Alves was the first to find the net with a 64th-minute spot kick awarded after Caion was brought down by Rayong goalkeeper Pattara Piyapatrakitti.

Caion then struck from close range to seal the result six minutes from time.

Samut Prakarn City, formerly known as Pattaya United before changing their name and home ground, joined Prachuap at the top with an impressive 2-0 victory away at Chonburi yesterday when both goals were scored in the second half.

The first goal came only a couple of minutes into the second half when Picha Utra opened the ball for Ibson Melo, whose shot left Chonburi goalkeeper Chanin Sae-ear with no chance for any heroics.

Samut Prakarn City had more in store for the Sharks as Melo picked up his second goal of the match in injury time.
