Bangkok-based Open House wins top Asian design honours

Open House, a lifestyle complex within Central Embassy, recently won the Grand Prize at the Design for Asia Awards (DFA). The award presentation ceremony will be held next Wednesday in Hong Kong.

Launched in 2003, the DFA -- organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre -- is a programme that celebrates design excellence from Asian perspectives. Fellow winners also include the Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC)'s headquarter in Charoen Krung.

The modern Open House complex -- by Tokyo-based Klein Dytham Architecture -- serves to seamlessly integrate different lifestyles together within one site.

More than a place that visitors just come and go, Open House was designed to be a liveable place -- a co-living space where people can lose themselves for hours, whether to simply hang out, relax, drink, dine, or to come up with ideas and inspirations for work. The 4,600m² open area combines restaurants, lounges, stores, galleries, co-working space and bookstore that altogether oozes modern air and cozy vibes. It caters to anyone from casual visitors who would like to just take a stroll around, to workers looking for a comfortable place to get their project going.

Open House was unveiled earlier this year to the delight of both local and foreign visitors. It now occupies a portion of the 6th Floor of the shopping mall next to the VIP cinema Embassy Diplomat Screens.

The introduction of Open House now breathes a new life into the otherwise quiet mall. And it makes the space to be more accessible to a diverse crowd.

When it comes to design, Open House comes decorated with plants, and the natural sunlight coming in helps to brighten up the mind. It also offers a great view of Bangkok, both during daytime and nighttime. There's just no better place for creativity to blossom.

In total there are 186 awardees recognised by the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2017. Other winners this year include The Edible Business Card (a business card made from a sheet of seaweed) by Geometry Global Japan, Agri-Chapel by Momoeda Yu Architecture in Japan and Mobike Classic (bicycle with GPS and proprietary smart-lock technology) by Mobike in China, to name only a few.

Open House is situated on the 6th floor of Central Embassy. It opens from 10am to 10pm daily. Get off at BTS Ploen Chit.
