Banging the drum for better representation of women

I’m unapologetically picking up the drum-banging that Thinkbox CEO Lindsey Clay began in 2015 when she called for a better representation of women in our sector: on panels; in articles, blogs, columns, and awards; as hosts and speakers at events and conferences and so on. Upon being invited to write for this Marketing Agencies Association (MAA) column, I hesitated. What would I write about? Who wants to hear from me? When the heck will I write it? But I only hesitated for a moment before responding with a: “Yes, of course I’ll write it.”

It’s because I’ve pledged that in 2015, I will say yes more than I say no to invitations such as this. I might even seek them out.

Casting my impostor syndrome to one side, the truth is that as a female business owner, leader and marketer of nearly 20 years, I’m a role model of sorts, so surely it’s essential that I make an effort to be a really brilliant one.

In 2015 I’m going to get comfortable feeling uncomfortable, and these are the things I’ll do to overcome all the reasons to say no.

Preparation

I will make time in my working day to do my research, know my subject, or at least my thoughts on the subject. As a result I’ll feel more confident and more likely to enjoy the experience.

Support

In 2015, I will also ensure I get support from my team, the business and my husband. It’s that 360-degree backing that will enable me to give my best.

Authenticity

I promise to be my own brilliant self. I would never describe myself as gutsy, dynamic, opinionated and outspoken, so why do I feel the need to take on these behaviours when in the spotlight (which then puts me off being in the spotlight)?

Inclusivity

I’m incredibly proud that the Livity leadership team is 75% women. If we take women with us on these journeys, we’ll all get there quicker.

So women of Livity; women of the MAA! Grab your drumsticks; you’re coming with me!
