The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has become the first Indian university to rank among the top ten institutions in any of the Times Higher Education Rankings.
IISc Bagalore ranked eighth in the organisation’s “The World’s Best Small Universities 2017” list, which assesses institutions across the world with less than 5,000 students.
The college has 3,398 students in total and places emphasis on scientific and technological research.
It ranked in the 201-250th band overall in the World University Rankings, and 91-100th in the World Reputation Rankings.
Indian institutions have performed well in recent rankings with IIT-Guwahati and Savitribai Phule Phine University coming fourteenth and eighteenth respectively in last year's list.
The California Institute of Technology in the USA ranked first in the small universities list, followed by the Ecole Normale Superieure in France, and the Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea.
Three institutions in both France and Italy made the top ten: in Italy, the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa ranked fifth, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna sixth, and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano at tenth place.
French institutions ranked at second, fourth and seventh place. None of the six schools have more than 3000 students.
