March 09--Bang Bang Pie Biscuits, the popular breakfast and brunch spot in Logan Square, plans to open a second location in Ravenswood. Set to open in May at 4947 N. Damen Ave., it'll take over the spot formerly occupied by Dolce Casa, which closed in November.
It's a space Bang Bang's owner Michael Ciapciak already knows quite well.
"I used to live in the neighborhood and would go to Dolce Casa and sit by the fireplace," says Ciapciak. "It was always such an extremely welcoming place."
A few months ago, he actually recommended the cafe to an employee of his. When she reported back that it had closed, he decided to reach out to the owner about purchasing it.
Considering the space has its original hardwood floors, a tin ceiling and that very important fireplace, there won't be a huge construction project before opening. "Normally it's so expensive to build a new restaurant," says Ciapciak. "This is much easier."
Ciapciak plans for the new location to have a more comfortable vibe than the original Bang Bang. At about 1,100 square feet, it's slightly bigger than the tightly packed room in Logan Square, allowing for some actual room between chairs.
When it opens, don't expect a radically different menu. "The crux of the menu will be the same: biscuit sandwiches and pie," says Ciapciak. "There will be a few unique items but nothing too crazy." He is open to changing things according to the needs of the neighborhood. "We'll open with an idea with what we think is good for the neighborhood, but we'll be flexible."
