Banbridge shed fire containing gas cylinders sees emergency services tackle blaze

Police are appealing for information about a fire at sheds in Co Down on Wednesday morning, January 20.

Emergency services attended the scene at Scarva Road in Banbridge that was reported at around 3.10am.

PSNI say they were informed that two sheds at the rear of a property int the area were on fire.

Officers say the shed was thought to contain acetylene cylinders.

Residents were evacuated from the area but are now allowed to return to their homes.

A spokesperson said: "The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and we would appeal to anyone who may have noticed anything unusual in the area between 2:30am and 3am to get in touch with us by calling 101."

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue service monitored the fire.

Police Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon had said: "The Scarva Road, Banbridge is currently closed between Peggy's Loaning and Grove Meadows. This is due to a fire in a shed at the rear of a property on the Scarva Road.

"This shed contains acetylene cylinders and local residents have been evacuated as a precaution. Please seek an alternative route.

"Northern Ireland Fire Service have advised that the road will be closed for several hours so that they can monitor the fire.

"As stated please seek an alternative route and avoid the area."
