Banani fire: At least 17 dead and 70 injured as huge blaze breaks out in tower block in Dhaka, Bangladesh

At least 17 people have been killed and about 70 injured after a huge fire broke out at a skyscraper in Bangladesh's capital.

Flames began to rip through the 19-storey FR Tower, in Dhaka's Banani area, at around 1pm local time on Thursday, trapping people inside and forcing some to try and jump to safety.

The city's fire service was working to tackle the blaze, as hundreds of shocked onlookers gathered at the foot of the building.

Military helicopters were used to spray water at the tower block as the inferno raged.

Dramatic footage showed bright orange flames engulfing the ninth and tenth floors, as thick grey smoke billowed into the sky.

Other footage posted online showed people falling from upper floors of the building as they tried to escape.

Witness Sajib Hasan said people were seen shouting for help from windows near the top of the building.

He said he watched at least a dozen people get rescued as firefighters used hydraulic lifts to get to the blaze.

The Bangladesh Daily Star newspaper reported that at least six people had fallen while trying to escape as many were seen trying to climb down using cables on the outside of the tower.

Tushar-or-Rashid, an employee of the Vivid Holidays tour company which is based at the building, said the fire began above them.

"All of our staff have come out safely but we don't know what happened to the people who work in the upper floors," he said.

The fire service said 19 teams were sent to the scene.

Banani, the area where the fire broke out, is a busy commercial district with multistory buildings, housing, offices, universities and restaurants.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

Last month, a massive blaze in an old neighbourhood of Dhaka, one of the world's most densely populated cities, killed at least 78 and injured dozens more.
