Ban on gambling sponsorship on football shirts set to be dropped, report claims

The Government won't comment on a report that it will drop a plan to ban gambling sponsors on football shirts.

A report in the Times claims proposals to ban football clubs from allowing betting companies to display their logos on strips will not be included as recommendations on an upcoming review of gambling legislation. Previously it has been suggested the idea would be included on the White Paper. But the Times says that recommendation has been dropped in favour of Premier League Clubs making a voluntary agreement.

In last season's Premier League, nine out of 20 clubs had a betting firm's logo on the front of their shirts. They include Newcastle United.

Campaigners have called for a ban due to fears fans, including children, are "bombarded" with gambling advertising. The logos are not included on children's size replica kits, but they do feature on adults' shirts and on the strips teams wear while playing.

A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) said it did not comment on speculation, but added in a statement: “We are undertaking the most comprehensive review of gambling laws in 15 years to ensure they are fit for the digital age.

“We will be publishing a White Paper as part of a review of gambling legislation in the coming weeks.”
