Ban for man caught drink driving twice in 16 hours

A man was caught drink driving by police twice on the same road in just 16 hours, a court has heard.

Grzegorz Kopijewski was found to be more than twice the alcohol limit on both occasions.

Police have condemned the actions of the 30-year-old, saying he showed a "blatant disregard for the law".

Swansea Magistrates Court heard that Kopijewski's Renault Laguna car was stopped on the A487 at Llanfarian near Aberystwyth at around 11.30pm on Wednesday, April 29 due to the way it was being driven.

A subsequent breath showed he had 80 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres  of breath, the legal limit being 35 micrograms.

Kopijewski was released from custody but just 16 hours later an officer stopped his car on the same stretch of road - the defendant was again asked to give a breath sample, with a result of 93 micrograms.

The drink driving limits explained:

What are the drink driving limits?

Kopijewski, of Ffynon Bedr, Lampeter, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving with excess alcohol when he appeared before justices.

He was made the subject of a 12 months community order with 120 hours of unpaid work, and was banned from driving for three years.

Speaking after the sentencing Dyfed-Powys Police roads policing sergeant Paul Owen-Williams said the defendant's conduct had been "simply unacceptable".

He said: "To get behind the wheel with this amount of alcohol in his system after just being charged for the same offence shows Kopijewski’s blatant disregard for the law.

"Worse than that, it would seem he was oblivious to the significant danger he was posing to other road users and himself.

"To be stopped twice and found to be under the influence of alcohol twice in this short space of time is quite simply unacceptable. Thanks to the proactive work of our roads policing team, he will now be off the road for a considerable amount of time."
