Bamboo shop Mabboo at Wapping Wharf closes permanently after three years

A shop in Bristol which sold clothing and accessories made from bamboo has closed permanently.

Mabboo was one of the first businesses to open at shipping container development Cargo 2 back in 2017, along with restaurants and fellow retailer John Kelly 1880+.

The independent business launched its harbourside site after the success of its first shop at city centre shopping centre The Galleries, which will remain open.

Mabboo's founder Ed Cheny said he is now looking to open a new shop outside Bristol.

"We’ve taken the difficult decision to consolidate our Bristol operations to just our original Galleries flagship store," he said.

"We are now looking to open a new Mabboo store in Bath or Cardiff to spread the bamboo love around the South West and Wales.

"Covid has accelerated our business thinking on this, and the retail opportunities available to us in Bath and Cardiff may previously have been out of reach as still an independently run business."

The former Mabboo site is located next to the unit which will soon reopen as Every Good Thing, Bristol's first fermented food shop.

In August Cargo welcomed two new food outlets in Jigaraki and Buxton and Bird, while a former yoga studio which had closed was taken on and reopened by a new owner.
