BAM pauses work on Birmingham construction sites

Construction group BAM says work will pause on all of its UK sites.

The company has a huge presence in Birmingham where it is currently building 103 Colmore Row and Two Chamberlain Square and also putting the finishing touches to One Chamberlain Square.

It said the move would come into force on March 25 and enable it to carry out further detailed reviews of the working practices necessary to reduce the risks of covid-19 on its sites.

A statement said: "Enabling the safest working conditions, as set out by Public Health England and the new site operating procedures developed by Build UK and the Construction Leadership Council, requires more time for detailed discussions and collaboration with clients, employees and our supply chain.

"Where work can be delivered according to these guidelines, it is anticipated that sites will re-start from Monday March 30.

"This date will be kept under constant review.

"Facilities management activity at BAM Construct across the UK has been assessed against the current guidelines and will continue.

"The majority of our facilities management sites are government public sector buildings which are all critical to our national effort to combat the covid-19."

BAM's facilities management division works in sectors such as health and social care, education, public services and local and national government and its teams are working to keep these buildings operational.

"All our operations remain under constant review," the statement concluded.

The 26-storey 103 Colmore Row is the replacement for the old NatWest Tower building and is due for completion next summer.

The main work on One Chamberlain Square completed last year, allowing the Birmingham office of financial services firm PwC to take up residence while fit out work is under way on Three Snowhill.

Earlier this year, BT announced the new 17-storey office block would provide a home for up to 4,000 staff at its new West Midlands hub.
