Sept. 08--Tim Ryan, publisher of the Baltimore Sun, was tapped to replace Austin Beutner as publisher of the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Tribune Publishing Co., which owns all three newspapers among its media holdings, made the announcement Tuesday.
"It is a privilege to lead the iconic Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union-Tribune," Ryan said in a statement.
"I am committed to ensuring that these brands continue their legacy of world-class journalism and grow their already-significant voices to drive deeper engagement with consumers and marketers across all platforms," Ryan said.
Jack Griffin, Tribune Publishing's chief executive, called Ryan "one of the country's most accomplished publishing executives" with a "successful track record of strategic acquisitions, revenue diversification and digital transformation" in the news business.
Beutner, a Los Angeles civic leader and former Wall Street investment banker, was fired Tuesday. He had been publisher and chief executive of The Times since Tribune Publishing became a separate, publicly held concern last year.
Beutner also spearheaded Tribune's purchase of the San Diego paper in May, creating the California News Group. Ryan would become publisher and chief executive of the California News Group.
Ryan, 56, has been publisher and chief executive of the Baltimore Sun Media Group since 2007.
He is also publisher and chief executive of the Morning Call Media Group, another Tribune property led by the Morning Call newspaper in the Lehigh Valley, Pa., area.
Ryan earlier held executive and management posts at the Chicago Tribune, another Tribune Publishing newspaper, and at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Ryan has a master's degree in business administration from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Tribune Publishing shares gained 8 cents to $11.07. The stock has lost more than half of its value this year.
