Baltimore Fire Chief Updates On Bridge Collapse Response Operation

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace has provided an update on the ongoing response to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. According to Wallace, the team involved in the operation continues to grow as an active marine search operation is currently underway.

Wallace mentioned that the initial response involved 50 personnel, including eight dive teams, and that this number has since increased. Sonar technology has been utilized to mark vehicles that have been located in the water.

During the operation, one individual was transported to a local trauma center in serious condition. Another person who was on the bridge at the time of the collapse refused medical service as they were uninjured.

Chief Wallace also addressed the issue of an oil sheen in the water following the collapse. He stated that harbor containment boom has been deployed around the vessel to contain the sheen. Early this morning, the smell of diesel fuel was detected before the sheen was visible.

The team's efforts are ongoing as they work to ensure the safety of all individuals involved and to manage the environmental impact of the incident. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
