Balmaclellan Smiddy commended in 2020 Scottish Civic Trust My Place awards

A £350,000 Glenkens community building had been commended in national awards.

Balmaclellan Smiddy received the accolade at the Scottish Civic Trust My Place awards.

The multi-purpose building has become a vibrant community hub and has breathed new life into the village.

It also provides valuable additional capacity for activities run by the Glenkens Community Arts Trust (GCAT) in nearby New Galloway.

GCAT chairman Alan Smith said: “It is a national award and it’s quite good that we were shortlisted. It’s not just about the quality of the build it’s about the positive impact on the community as well.

“The Smiddy had made a big difference to the middle of the village.

“Sometimes you struggle to get parked which is great.”

The new centre has become a focus for local heritage and training in traditional skills.

Its activities complement the work of the Glenkens Men’s Shed behind the Smiddy building.

Judges also commended the building for its low energy use thanks to high grade insulation, triple glazing and solar panels.

The Smiddy opened in November last year.
