Ballymun shopping centre demolition works begin

Work has begun on the demolition of one of north Dublin's most historic shopping centres.

The Ballymun shopping centre is the last existing building of the 1960's suburb, which included the high-rise towers that marked the Dublin skyline for decades.

Locals in the area have been waiting on the demolition so that plans for the regeneration of the area can move forward.

The centre has been dilapidated for a number of years, with approval for the demolition granted by Dublin City Council in March 2018.

Councillor Noeleen Reilly said that the demolition was a "stark reminder" of what was proposed and not followed through for the area.

She said: "So works starts today on the Demolition of the Ballymun Shopping Centre.

"Needs to happen but sad all the same and a reminder of what was not delivered on during the regeneration.

"Hopefully we can now look forward and deliver real retail facilities in the area for families."
