Ballymun residents call on owners of Eurospar building to engage with locals over proposals for 14 apartments

Residents in Ballymun have called on the owners of a building that could become home to 14 apartments to engage with locals.

Plans to develop the homes above the Eurospar shop on the Ballymun Road have been refused by Dublin City Council.

But now the future of the development is with An Bord Pleanala, but many locals have argued that it is an "over-development" of the area.

The two to five-storey proposal will be located opposite the DCU campus if it is approved.

A spokeswoman for the Wadelai / Hillcrest & District Residents' Association said: "Nobody in the area is opposed to a well thought out plan to improve our neighbourhood, however, what the proposal currently on the table amounts to is an over-development that seeks to change the character of our neighbourhood.

“Parking in the area where the shops are situated is currently a nightmare for residents, especially with DCU and Albert College Park across the road there has been near misses and tress being damaged by rogue drivers in the past."

Over 60 submissions were made on the original application that was refused by the council last May.

They continued: “While we acknowledge that there is a need to increase housing supply in Dublin, we feel that 14 one-bedroom apartments will do nothing to help this nor will it add anything positive to our neighbourhood, when a city starts to build up, it should be starting in the centre not in the suburbs.

“We were very disappointed to learn that the initial notice for planning was hidden behind a tray of flowers in a window that is covered by shutters outside business hours.

"We are very disappointed that the owners have chosen not to engage with residents on this issue and have fallen deaf to residents’ concerns.

"We are calling on the owners of the Eurospar to go back to the drawing board and include the residents’ of the area in their planning from stage one!”
